Hello everyone! My name is Zelina Chen and I just finished my 3rd year at the University of Washington. I’ve been studying computer science since high school, when I first took a CS class. Ever since then, I’ve been learning and immersing myself in this field. Currently, I’m most interested in database management, distributed systems, and artificial intelligence.
In June, I started my internship at Hiya working on the Platform Team. The Platform Team is the backbone of Hiya. We are in charge of managing our servers and keeping them healthy. My project for the summer is to help Hiya with their data monitoring solution. Everyone on the team is knowledgeable, intelligent, and full of personality, so it’s been a blast working alongside them and learning from them!
Though this was not my first internship, this was the first time I got to work with distributed systems and managing servers! I got to learn a lot about system infrastructure and system engineering.
My position at Hiya is of a software development intern, so it was a surprise to me that I have not done much coding. The first couple of weeks was a lot of hands on learning. I had to quickly pick up on the technologies that Hiya uses, and familiarize myself with many new concepts. At the same time, I was also beginning actual project work. It was challenging, but a lot of fun, and exciting to learn many new things.
All in all, I’ve been having an amazing time at Hiya. Working with such great people and being able to challenge myself every day — it doesn’t get much better than this.
